Swag Bucks! Earn money for searching!

I wanted to tell you about one of my newest favorite discoveries!!! It's called Swag Bucks! You might have noticed it in the upper lefthand corner on this page and wondered what it was all about. Well, I'm going to tell you all about it right now...

I was pretty hesitant to jump on the Swag Bucks bandwagon. I saw blog after blog talk about it forever, but I was really skeptical. I finally decided to try it about a month ago. Boy, am I sure wishing that I had joined sooner!!!

This is the best program ever. It is in no way a scam. It's awesome!! Basically, you set Swagbucks as your search engine and get paid in "swagbucks" when you search. It's just like using Google, but it's called Swagbucks. I don't use it all day, but I use it throughout the day so that I can earn for searching. Usually, I'll earn anywhere from 1 to 4 swagbucks a day, depending on how often I search. There are other ways to earn as well, like referring friends, trading in cell phones, following the newsletter, playing Twitter Trivia, following on facebook, and shopping online. Searching is the easiest, though. You just earn a little money for doing what you already normally do every day while you're on the internet. It's so great!

Here's how I make it work for me. Instead of going to bookmarked sites, I type them in Swagbucks and then click on them. It's one little extra step that earns me money in the process. =)

I've been signed up for a little over a month now, and I already have 200 Swagbucks! My favorite prize to cash in for is an Amazon.com giftcard. It only costs 45 swagbucks for a $5 giftcard. That means I almost have a $25 Amazon giftcard! It's great to use as a little extra money to buy Christmas presents, birthday gifts, etc.

So do yourself a favor and go sign up! You'll be glad you did. Trust me!

Starbucks Via Challenge!

My husband, who works part time at Starbucks, has been telling me about how he will be letting customers taste test the new Via instant coffee this weekend. I kept asking him, "Well, are there any perks, coupons, or deals to go along with it? I want to blog about it!" Haha!

The information is finally out! Customers who take the "Via Challenge" from October 2nd - 5th will receive a coupon for a free tall coffee and a $1/1 Via instant coffee coupon! What is the Via Challenge? It's basically taste testing the instant Via versus their traditional fresh-brewed Pike Place coffee to see if you can tell the difference! Of course my husband, being a coffee connoisseur, claims there is a huge difference that is easily noticeable. Free sampling and some coupons? I'm there. =)

Use the CVS Flu Coupon up to THREE times!!!

If you have taken the CVS Flu test recently to receive a $5/$25 coupon, you have probably noticed that you can only use the coupon one time per Extra Care card. This is such a great coupon to have to make deals so much sweeter. In fact, just the other day I was wishing I had 2 of these, since I had to do 2 separate transactions to roll my ECBs. Well, good news! There are now 3 different links out, that print the $5/$25 coupon with 3 different barcodes! This means you'll have three of these coupons to use per Extra Card card. I'm really excited about this. =)

$5/$25 #1
$5/$25 #2
$5/$25 #3

Happy CVS'ing!!! I will be sharing about my CVS trip probably either today or tomorrow...

Thanks goes to

Q & A Time: How do I know what coupons I have?

Joann sent me a great question...

"I think you said you file away each Sunday's coupons (and try to obtain a second set), by date, but don't clip them. Then, how do you know which coupons you have?"

I touched on this in my "Supermarket Secrets" series. It is a 5 part series that explains in-depth how to save money on groceries. Part two briefly talks about how to find which coupons you have that match up with sales, but I wanted to do another post on the subject. Joann is not the only one who has asked me this question recently.

First of all, as Joann said, I organize my coupons by the filing method. This doesn't work for everybody. I just find that it is what works best for me, and saves me hours of time each week. It also prevents me from clipping coupons that I won't end up using and throwing away coupons that I might need! (That sounded a bit confusing, but in a nutshell...I only clip the exact coupons I will use each week).

How do I organize this? My filing system is pictured below. I simply mark the date on the front of each insert with a sharpie. Then, I file them away by date! I find it easiest to file them by month and by type. For example, I have a "September RP" and a "September SS." I keep all of my PG's in one folder, since they only come out once a month. I also have an "Other" folder and a "Publix booklets" folder. (Confused on all the lingo? Go here)

So now, you have them filed away all nice and neat, and you have saved time by not clipping them all day Sunday. =) How do you find them and know what you have? This is what Joann was wondering, along with many others.

The answer: You use blogs and coupon databases.

Find blogs that post deals with coupon match-ups for your favorite stores. For example, on this blog, I post the best deals with coupon match-ups for Publix, CVS, Walgreens, and Target on a weekly basis. I post an item with the sale price, and then underneath that item I list corresponding coupons and where to find them (ex: 9-27-09 PG means Sep. 27th Proctor and Gamble insert from the Sunday newspaper). There are hundreds of money-saving blogs out there. You just have to find your favorites! I have about 20 blogs that I visit on a regular basis. That's way more than you need, especially if you're just starting out. Keep it simple, especially in the beginning! Each blog author posts different stores. There are way too many for every author to post all of them!

Another way to find great store deals with coupon match-ups is Hot Coupon World. I recommend this site to ALL beginners. Go to the grocery store, national chain, or drug store forums. You will find a separate thread for every store you can imagine. Look for your store, and you'll see the deals posted every week, along with the coupons you need and where to find them!

Finally, you're probably thinking, "well, that's great that people post the absolute best deals with coupons, but what about when I want to know if I have a coupon for an item that isn't necessarily the best deal out there this week? What if I just need an item, and want to know if I have a coupon for it?" Simple...coupon databases. A coupon database is just what it sounds like. It has a database of all coupons that exist that haven't expired yet. You type in what product you're looking for, and a list of all coupons for that product appears. For each coupon listed, there is a location and date so that you can find it. You then look in the corresponding coupon insert that you have in your filing system, pull it out, and cut out the coupon! There are many coupon databases on the internet. I'll tell you about my two favorite ones.

My two favorite coupon databases are Coupon Mom and Hot Coupon World. A little bit about each:

  • Must sign up (it's free)
  • Separates coupons by region and state, which is really nice. Coupons differ by region occasionally.
  • Not as thorough as Hot Coupon World - only includes insert coupons (from newspaper) and some printable coupons.
  • Easier to understand than Hot Coupon World.
  • Don't have to sign up for, but you can if you want to.
  • VERY thorough. Includes coupons for mail in rebates, home mailers, blinkies, tearpads, winetags, hangtags, peelies, flyers, inserts, printables, etc.
  • A little more cluttered and difficult for beginners, because of its thoroughness.
So that is my advice on how to know which coupons you have, once they're filed away! If you prefer not to use this method, you can always check out other ideas from other bloggers. Again, it's just what works for me. Everyone has their own style. =) Happy couponing, and I hope that helps! Feel free to e-mail me with questions at frugalfunfortune@gmail.com or comment below!

Menu Plan Monday!

This week is pretty easy. We didn't end up using even half of the meals planned for last week. Every night, something kept coming up! So we will be eating a lot of meals off of last week's meal plan. =) Makes shopping very easy...

Here is what's on the menu for us this week:

Monday: My brother-in-law's birthday. Dinner at the birthday party.

Tuesday: Spinach and Potato Frittata

Wednesday: Corn mashed potato curry and salad

Thursday: Southwestern Pasta Salad

Friday: Ethiopian Chickpea Wat with Injera (flatbread)

Saturday: Chicken Parmesan (using up the last of the chicken in the freezer), homemade bread, and salad

Sunday: Brown rice, broccoli, cheese, and walnut surprise

As always, feel free to e-mail me if there is a recipe you would like that does not have a link. Also, I tweak the recipes quite a bit from the original. Feel free to e-mail me about that as well, if you have any questions about what changes make each recipe a little better (in my opinion)! =)

Super Savings Saturday!!!

This week was kind of crazy for me. First of all, my camera was not cooperating on the day I did my Publix grocery shopping. Therefore, I did not get a picture of what I bought, and I am going to skip the details on Publix. I spent $47, and saved $54.05 total. It wasn't a great week. There wasn't much on sale, and I bought a lot of fresh vegetables for meals. But that's okay! I still scored some freebies and close-to-freebies (such as bagel bites, 3 glade candles, and glade plug-ins).

I did get a picture of my Walgreens trip...however, that trip quickly became a disaster! I went into Walgreens with my trip perfectly planned out, how I would roll the Register Rewards to pay as little as possible out of pocket in 3 transactions, etc. I will spare you the details of everything that happened, but basically I had a cashier who was not familiar with coupons or their coupon policy. Items were voided, the register messed up, my coupons kept beeping, I had way more coupons than items, I couldn't "roll" my register rewards, and so much more! haha! Sometimes this happens. It's the life of a couponer. What can you do? :)

Here's what I ended up getting (pictured above):

1 Thermacare heating pad
2 Tylenol Cold
1 Glade oil candle tin
1 Glade oil refill (3 pk)
1 Carefree pantiliners
1 Soleil diposable razors (4 pk)
2 Oral B indicator toothbrush
3 Febreze candles (on clearance)
2 Air Wick air freshener systems
2 Reese's pumpkins (only 1 pictured, ate the other! haha)
1 Chapstick and 3 caramel chews (fillers to have more items than coupons)

What I paid out of pocket: $15.11
Register Rewards amount received: $12.50 (and I didn't receive the ones for the Glade candle deal...at that point, I didn't want to argue it)
Total Savings (according to receipts): $67.75

***So, IF my transactions had worked the way I planned them, I would have only paid about $3 out of pocket. I would have rolled the $12.50 I got back to help balance out the $15. Since they didn't work out due to many problems, I ended up having to pay out of pocket $15. That's okay, though. I have a lot of Register Rewards to use for deals in the future.

Publix + Walgreens = $62.11 spent this week
*I am a little over my budget of $50, but we're still looking good for the month of September. The first two weeks of the month, we only spent $20 or $30, so we have some extra spending room remaining. It all balances out so that we're still under our $50 a week budget for the entire month! =)

Hopefully next week will be a little better...

Two new free Redbox codes!

There are two new free codes for Redbox! I'm pretty excited about this, because we're having my little brother-in-law over for a sleepover tonight. This means a free movie for us to watch while we eat our popcorn!

The two codes are:

9HB6MP22 - valid at all Redboxes
SMR8DVD - valid only at McDonald's kiosks

Hopefully these will work! Sometimes I don't have as much luck with these as I would like. It's worth a try, though!

If you're new to redbox, some other codes that have worked consistently for me in the past are:

BREAKROOM
DVDONME
DVDATWAG - only at Walgreens

You can also go here to find out how well certain codes are working for other people.

Enjoy your movie night!!!

Thanks, Deal Seeking Mom!
